The Hidden Challenge of Spa Work

Spa therapists give energy to every client they treat. Without intentional recovery practices, burnout is common — and it is the leading reason experienced therapists leave the profession.

Physical Self-Care for Therapists

  • Body mechanics matter. Always use your body weight, not just arm strength, when applying pressure.
  • Limit to 6–7 massage hours per day maximum. Many employers push therapists to 8–9 hours — this leads to long-term injury.
  • Stretch for 10 minutes after each shift. Focus on wrists, shoulders and lower back.
  • Get a massage yourself at least once a month.

Mental & Emotional Self-Care

  • Create a ritual to mentally "switch off" after work
  • Do not take client problems home with you
  • Connect with other therapists — professional community prevents isolation
  • Take your full days off — rest is non-negotiable

Choosing the Right Employer

Always ask in interviews: "How many treatment hours per day does the team typically work?" A fair answer is 5–6 hours of hands-on time.
